Aesop Says was written by and is directed by Evelyn Weymouth, the founder and Executive Director of the All-of-us Express Children's Theatre. Originally written for a church performance, the play was expanded for its first All-of-us Express production in July 1993 (also at Kinawa Middle School, with a cast of 67) and has been expanded again for production this summer, with a cast of more than 80 young people.
The story takes place in ancient Greece, beginning with the household slaves returning to their quarters after their day's labor. As they discuss the day and grumble about their work and about each other, the oldest slave, Aesop, breaks in every now and then with a tale to help solve their problems. Aesop tells the story of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" to cure one slave of chronic lying, "The Sun and the Wind" to quell an argument, "The Lion and the Mouse" to show that friends come in all sizes, "The Hare and the Tortoise" to convince one slave to slow down while working, and "The Ants and the Grasshopper" to settle a lover's quarrel. During the play everyone, including the audience, learns something from Aesop's wise stories.
